Trout Unlimited Members Share Their Trout Tips

Trout Tips is a new book loaded with useful fly-fishing hints from Trout Unlimited members. The book covers topics from presentation, to casting, to reading water, to fly selection. According to the book’s editor, Kirk Deeter, “To be clear, this is not a ‘guidebook’ or a fly-fishing ‘manual’. There are plenty of those already…It’s a book of tips. A bag of tricks. Some for the novice, others for experts. By anglers, for anglers.” Click here to check it out.

Winston GM Talks New Rods

In this 20-minute podcast, Derek Bird catches up with R.L Winston Rod Co. general manager, Jeff Wagner, to chat about the company’s new rods that are set to hit the market this summer. Wagner provides a behind the scenes look at the care and attention that goes into the creation of each Winston rod, and then he discusses the type of action an angler can expect while casting the Kairos and the Nimbus.

The two also get a little sidetracked and chat about carp fishing and even confess to the use of the Squirmy Wormy during disparate times. Click through below to listen to the interview.

Swisher’s New Trout Patterns

The Swisher name is no stranger to new and innovate trout patterns. In the 80s Doug Swisher cowrote the best-selling fly-fishing book of all time, Selective Trout. Now he and his wife, Sharon, have a new book that’s definitely worth checking out. Flies for Selective Trout: Complete Step-By-Step Instructions on How to Tie the Newest Swisher Flies is filled with new recipes and tying instructions for flies that will provide anglers with a few more options when the trout get tight-lipped. The book has 33 patterns in all, ranging from dry flies to nymphs to streamers. Click here to check out the book.

The New Nimbus from Winston

The R.L. Winston Rod Co. has two new fly rods they’re releasing summer 2017: the Nimbus and the Kairos. Last week they invited Fly Fusion editor, Derek Bird, to their factory in Twin Bridges, Montana for a sneak peek.

After testing out the Nimbus he said, “I walked through the factory and watched how Winston makes their rods. There’s a lot of care that goes into each rod right from cutting and wrapping the graphite all the way through to the hand-written rod inscription. It’s an impressive process. After visiting the factory, they put me on a small spring creek with the new Nimbus. The entire time I was casting I felt in touch with the rod; it has an extremely smooth casting feel. The Nimbus is a sensitive rod with tons of power.”

According to Winston, the Nimbus is “a completely new design inspired by our premium Boron rods. Using the same multi modulus graphite as our Boron rods along with versatile mid-tip flex tapers, the Nimbus provides all the core attributes and qualities one has come to expect from a Winston. Incredibly smooth casting, the Nimbus’ progressive action delivers unmatched all-graphite performance, with both the power and finesse to fish even the most challenging situations. Offered in a full range of freshwater, saltwater, and spey models, Nimbus rods are finished in a beautiful Big Sky Blue color and sport premium componentry and our renowned handwritten rod inscription. Proudly designed and produced in Twin Bridges, Montana, the Nimbus is simply the best all-graphite fly rod on the market.”

Winston Adds a Slick Casting New Rod

Around this time of year, the Fly Fusion Team begins to hear rumours about what’s on the horizon for new fly-fishing gear. This year the first rumour to materialize comes from the R.L. Winston Fly Rod Company. Last week they invited editor, Derek Bird,  down to Montana to test out two new rods they plan to release this summer.  He tested  the new Winston Kairos on a larger stream throwing streamers to browns. After testing the rod he said, “The Kairos is a slick casting, fast action rod that handles streamers (and anything else I threw) with ease, even in the wind. The Kairos has an upper end feel without the upper end price tag.”

According to Winston, “The Kairos features a complete series of freshwater, saltwater, and spey models. With a modern, fast action, the Kairos provides the perfect blend of speed and smoothness, allowing any angler to enjoy a wide variety of fishing applications. Kairos rods showcase a striking Clear Graphite finish complemented by Winston Green thread wraps and our classic hand-written rod inscription as the final touch. Proudly designed and built by anglers in Twin Bridges, Montana.”

Keep your eyes open for it’s release.

A Reminder for Fly Anglers to Stay Safe on the Water

Vancouver, B.C. – As boaters across British Columbia prepare for the official start of the 2017 boating season this long weekend, Boating BC is urging boaters to put safety first.

National Safe Boating Awareness Week is May 20th to the 26th, coinciding with the launch of the boating season, and Boating BC President Don Prittie says boating is both safe and easy.

“Every year we see more and more people take up boating as a fun, safe and easy activity to explore our province,” says Prittie. “We’re optimistic that the 2017 boating season will be as active as ever. With over 27,000 kilometers of coastline and hundreds of lakes and rivers we have a simple message for British Columbians: Get out on the water but do it safely.”

Prittie says there are easy and affordable safe boating courses available online and around the province and everyone on the water should remember some basic tips:

  • Always where a properly fitted personal flotation device.
  • Never drink and boat.
  • Keeping emergency kits, navigation equipment and distress equipment onboard at all times.
  • Check weather conditions and patterns before leaving and during your trip.
  • Create a float plan before you leave so friends or family know where you’re going.Click here for for more safety tips

OtterBox Gets Even Cooler

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The outdoors are not a club with velvet rope and insider access. The outdoors belong to everyone, and OtterBox enables people to get out and do it their own way. OtterBox, an outdoor staple since 1998, is proud to introduce the Venture line of premium rugged coolers.

Venture coolers incorporate superior cooling technology and trusted OtterBox durability. The design is certified bear-resistant, can hold ice for up to 14 days and has been drop tested for durability on every side and edge, empty and full. 1 But Venture takes it even further with a fully customizable experience. A subtle and sturdy mounting system lets users attach accessories that fit their lifestyle. A cutting board, dry storage tray and separators help organize and maximize the internal space, while the sidetable, cup holders and drybox clips extend use beyond the confines of the cooler.

“Being outdoors is about having fun, not worrying if you’re doing it the way the pros do or following a set of unwritten rules,” said OtterBox founder Curt Richardson. “The only requirements should be to be respectful and enjoy. I started OtterBox in 1998 as an outdoor brand, and we’re refocusing our efforts here in a big way. Our new coolers deliver on the OtterBox commitment to innovation, quality and our customers.” click here

Fly Boxes That Give Back

From its simple beginnings that formally began in 2014, the young Utah company Tacky Fly Fishing has enjoyed significant success. The company was formed with the goal of building the best fly box in the industry, and their national and international industry awards and rapidly growing sales numbers attest to their success.

Now Tacky Fly Fishing wants to give back by sharing the passion its founders and owners have for fly fishing with children and families that are at a tough place in their lives. The company has joined forces with Primary Children’s Hospital to host the first annual Tacky Cares event for children that are being treated at Primary Children’s Hospital along with their families, for a day on the water. “We want to help them, even if for just a short time, take their minds off their struggles and treatment. We want to make this an event that they’ll never forget and one in which they feel the love and support of a global community,” says Tacky co-owner Shaun Curtis.

The company has solicited the support of that global community in the form of hand tied flies, hundreds so far, donated by fly fishers from across the globe. The flies will be loaded into Tacky Fly Boxes and given to the Primary’s patients participating in the event, which will take place May 6 at Falcon’s Ledge Lodge, graciously donated by Dave Nelson for the event. Each family will be accompanied by a professional fly fishing guide and will have the opportunity to learn the basics of fly fishing, catch fish on Falcon’s private ponds, and tie flies, play games and relax in the lodge.

Supporting sponsors for the event include other Utah-based fly fishing companies including Utah Fly Guides, Blue Halo Fly Rods, and Rising. More information about the event can be found at www.tackyflyfishing.com/tacky-cares, or by contacting Spencer Higa at spencer@tackyflyfishing.com.
