Stimmies Virtual Vote: The Art of Fly Fishing

Stimmie Awards virtual vote

Meet one of the finalists for the 2020 Stimmie Awards: “The Art of Fly Fishing,” from Bluff Line Media.

Brooke Belohlavek is an artist and educator living in small-town Wyoming who found a love for fly fishing one day after an ascent atop the Grand Teton. Before long, her newfound passion made its way to her canvas. Today, Brooke paints trout for folks all over the country who want to enjoy a beautiful reminder of their fly-fishing experiences. Last summer, we joined Brooke to fish and film some high-country creeks and rivers that are close to her heart.

As one of the finalists in the Stimmies Virtual Vote, “The Art of Fly Fishing” is now open to public voting. You can cast your ballot for this film over at the International Fly Fishing Film Festival website.

Be sure to check out all of the finalists before submitting your vote. There are some great films ready to be seen!

Fly Shop Spotlight: Emerald Water Anglers

Fly Shop Spotlight: Emerald Water Anglers

As a nod to our excellent retail partners around the world, we want to highlight some of the fly shops that carry Fly Fusion Magazine. First up, Emerald Water Anglers in Seattle, Washington.

From Emerald Water Anglers:

August and September are fantastic months to be wielding a fly rod in the greater Seattle area. Migratory salmon are arriving for beach anglers, hoppers on the Yakima, summer steelhead for the two handers, and the creeks—those lovely little blue lines on mountainous maps—are low, clear and filled with wild trout. Welcome to summer!
If you’re ever in the Seattle area and need to wet a line, be sure to stop in and see the gang at EWA!

Weekend Writing Workshop with Jim Mclennan

When: Aug. 21-23, 2020
Where: York Creek B & B, Crowsnest Pass, AB

If you’re interested in writing – particularly writing about the outdoors, here’s an opportunity to spend a weekend with Fly Fusion field editor and Water Marks author, Jim McLennan. This workshop is for new or aspiring writers, and will address what you need to know to write for magazines, blogs, websites, brochures, and v-logs. We’ll talk about both the why and the how of writing. Some topics will be how to start, how to stop, writing an effective query letter, understanding the market for your writing, the importance of re-writing, the importance of authenticity, and additional resources to use.

This workshop is for people of any age who are interested in writing, and learning more about it. Time will be spent in the group, talking, discussing and learning from Jim. We’ll critique, edit and write some words together. There will also be time reserved for the solitary aspect of writing, which is – well, writing.

The Health Collection: Baja

Located in northwest Mexico, the Baja Peninsula features one of the world’s most diverse and fantastic saltwater fisheries. On any given day, there’s no telling what kind of fish you’ll be able to tempt with a fly.

But the real draw here is a finely coiffed fish with flaring dorsal fins and an attitude to match: the one and only roosterfish.

Join the Capture Adventure Media crew on an epic Baja adventure in The Buffet Series: Baja.

The Health Collection: Chrome

There is nothing in this world quite like a steelhead fresh from the sea. Its colors radiate and shimmer in unreal streaks of silver and green. Its resplendent leaps are powered by the one primal instinct it can’t overpower: survival.

The very idea that a small, trout-sized fish could survive in the ocean for several years and then return to its home as a broad-shouldered, silvery missile is impressive. That it does this in order to spawn and continue its species is inspiring, especially now.

Join the Capture Adventure Media crew on a celebration of wild steelhead in The Buffet Series: Chrome, a short film that takes you to the wilds of the Olympic Peninsula in search of steel.

The Health Collection: Mako

Imagine the world getting back to normal. What does that look like now? Does it still involve anglers catching sharks on the fly? It had better, because we’re not sure we want to live in a world without something so singularly unbelievable, heart-pumping, and just plain awesome.

If your quarantine needs a little pick-me-up, you might want to strap in for our next offering: “Mako”

Courtesy of Angler’s Eye Media, this adventure searches out one of the strongest, most aggressive fish on the planet: the mako shark. Off the coast of southern California exists one of the world’s top mako fisheries. With speed, strength, and what may be the most acrobatic aerials of any game fish in the ocean, the mako will test not only every bit of gear and knowledge available, but also the will and determination of any angler that sets out to find—and catch—these world-class apex predators.

The Health Collection: Surface

Sometimes, the way a situation presents itself isn’t obvious at first—in both fly fishing and in life. There are challenges, obstacles, and a fair amount of frustration. Occasionally, however, the dark curtains open up to reveal something so unexpected and rewarding that we’re simply left in awe.

Next in our Health Collection lineup: Blown Away, by Fly Fusion Films.

“Surface” is a film about extraordinary adventures that create life-long memories. Derek Bird of Fly Fusion Magazine and Ross Purnell of Fly Fisherman Magazine team up to search for large native rainbows on a remote stream in British Columbia’s Cariboo region. After a floatplane trip through the rugged and towering Cariboo Mountains, the anglers float down a nearly inaccessible glacial stream. What they experience along the way is nothing short of unforgettable.

“Blown Away” sees the Fly Fusion hosts show up on a favorite stretch of river just as major windstorm blows down the valley. They set up the rods in hopes that the wind will push terrestrials onto the water. When the wind finally dies down, their persistence is rewarded with a number of spectacular trout.
