The Art of Fly Fishing | Bluff Line Media

The next selection for the 2021 Virtual IF4 is The Art of Fly Fishing, by Bluff Line Media. This film was the winner of the inaugural Stimmie Awards, earning its place in the 2021 IF4. From the filmmakers:

Brooke Belohlavek is an artist and educator in remote Baggs, Wyoming, who found a love for fly fishing one day after an ascent atop Grand Teton. Before long, her newfound passion made its way to her canvas. Today, Brooke paints trout for folks all over the country who want to enjoy a beautiful reminder of their fly-fishing experiences. This summer, we joined Brooke to fish and film some high-country creeks and rivers that are close to her heart for The Art of Fly Fishing.

Be sure to check out the rest of the films and buy tickets for your local show at the IF4 website.

Northbound | Bouva Media

Welcome to the 2021 Virtual IF4! We’re extremely excited for the lineup of films this year, and will be rolling out trailers for each over the next few weeks. Our first trailer is for a film about the singular focus of one steelhead guide in British Columbia: Northbound, by Bouva Media.

Todd Scharf, a lifelong Spey fishing guide, relocates his business and family to the northern frontier of British Columbia to chase one of the most sought-after fish in the world: the steelhead. At an early age, Todd was obsessed with steelhead and could not veer away from the inevitable fact that hunting for them would be his lifelong career. He decided to move to Terrace, B.C., to chase the biggest and baddest salmonid species and open up a new door of adventure for his clients that he considers family. A decade later, he has settled into his new environment and understands the water he fishes better than anyone. The sacrifice he made to move up north has paid off as he is constantly finding new opportunities in the unknown waters of the remote northern frontier of British Columbia. Todd now wonders if the reason for moving north wasn’t a pull from the fish, but perhaps an escape from the craziness of the urban world.

Be sure to visit the IF4 website to purchase tickets to your local virtual screening and view trailers for all of the films!

How To Use Sinking Leaders

In this episode of RIO’s “How To” series, RIO R&D Product Manager Chris Walker explains how to fish sinking leaders. Sinking leaders (or VersiLeaders in the RIO stable) are great additions to a floating line to turn it into an instant, and temporary sink tip. Chris explains the difference between sinking leaders and sinking tips, how to attach the right amount of tippet to a sinking leader, and runs through the RIO portfolio of sink rates and VersiLeader options.

The Health Collection: Baja

Located in northwest Mexico, the Baja Peninsula features one of the world’s most diverse and fantastic saltwater fisheries. On any given day, there’s no telling what kind of fish you’ll be able to tempt with a fly.

But the real draw here is a finely coiffed fish with flaring dorsal fins and an attitude to match: the one and only roosterfish.

The Health Collection: Chrome

There is nothing in this world quite like a steelhead fresh from the sea. Its colors radiate and shimmer in unreal streaks of silver and green. Its resplendent leaps are powered by the one primal instinct it can’t overpower: survival.

The very idea that a small, trout-sized fish could survive in the ocean for several years and then return to its home as a broad-shouldered, silvery missile is impressive. That it does this in order to spawn and continue its species is inspiring, especially now.

Join the Capture Adventure Media crew on a celebration of wild steelhead in The Buffet Series: Chrome, a short film that takes you to the wilds of the Olympic Peninsula in search of steel.

The Health Collection: Mako

Imagine the world getting back to normal. What does that look like now? Does it still involve anglers catching sharks on the fly? It had better, because we’re not sure we want to live in a world without something so singularly unbelievable, heart-pumping, and just plain awesome.

If your quarantine needs a little pick-me-up, you might want to strap in for our next offering: “Mako”

Courtesy of Angler’s Eye Media, this adventure searches out one of the strongest, most aggressive fish on the planet: the mako shark. Off the coast of southern California exists one of the world’s top mako fisheries. With speed, strength, and what may be the most acrobatic aerials of any game fish in the ocean, the mako will test not only every bit of gear and knowledge available, but also the will and determination of any angler that sets out to find—and catch—these world-class apex predators.

The Health Collection: Surface

Sometimes, the way a situation presents itself isn’t obvious at first—in both fly fishing and in life. There are challenges, obstacles, and a fair amount of frustration. Occasionally, however, the dark curtains open up to reveal something so unexpected and rewarding that we’re simply left in awe.

Next in our Health Collection lineup: Blown Away, by Fly Fusion Films.

“Surface” is a film about extraordinary adventures that create life-long memories. Derek Bird of Fly Fusion Magazine and Ross Purnell of Fly Fisherman Magazine team up to search for large native rainbows on a remote stream in British Columbia’s Cariboo region. After a floatplane trip through the rugged and towering Cariboo Mountains, the anglers float down a nearly inaccessible glacial stream. What they experience along the way is nothing short of unforgettable.

“Blown Away” sees the Fly Fusion hosts show up on a favorite stretch of river just as major windstorm blows down the valley. They set up the rods in hopes that the wind will push terrestrials onto the water. When the wind finally dies down, their persistence is rewarded with a number of spectacular trout.

The Health Collection: Laplanders

As the world continues to evolve amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we here at Fly Fusion and the International Fly-Fishing Film Festival just want to share some good vibes. And for us, that means taking our minds off of everything else and focusing on fly fishing. At least for a little while.

For the next installment of the Health Collection, we share a story about anglers in northern Sweden: “Laplanders” by Hooké.

“Laplanders” traces the portrait of those who live by the rivers of Lapland in Northern Sweden. Their quest for the Baltic Salmon is one every fisherman can relate to: an ever-going search for the next fish, and the only certitude is the efforts that will be needed to reach it. This film is an immersion into the life of those who chase, document and protect the salmon in the land of the midnight sun.
